30th Thanksgiving Race! Seems like just yesterday that Rich Dunning and I were out on a long run when he brought up the idea of BCRR taking over the then canceled Thanksgiving Day 5 mile race. Rich took the idea to the board and was told that he could do it if he wanted but it would not be a club event. He asked me, his wife and a few BCRR friends if he could count on our help. We each took responsibility for various tasks not knowing much about race management. We pulled off the race and gave a nice check to charity.
Being BCRR people we naturally talked about our club and the Winter Series to participants. A lot of those people signed up for the club and the decision was made that the race would be a club event. The race continues to grow in many ways. We are expecting ten times as many runners this year as we had for that first race. We are raising money for multiple charities.
The only area that needs to grow more is our volunteers. This is the largest individual participant club event of the year. We added a 5K option to our 5 mile and 1 mile distances. To celebrate 30 years the race shirt is a ¼ zip pullover.
Sign ups have been going at record pace and we need help in all areas.
